Easy Learning English

The need for learning English, the global language, is growing in leaps and bounds. Rural childrenespecially have a tough time, learning a foreign language. Recognizing this need,Vidyarambam has taken the task of demystifying English and teaching it in a fun basedmethod to rural students with the end goal to read, write and speak English.

Goal:
  • Make the process of learning English as a second language more enjoyable
  • Ability to read and write in English and achieve a certain amount of fluency in conversing in English
  • Negate the fear of learning English which directly reflects in the drop-out rates in schools

Objective:

The ELE program has been designed in such a way that the goals mentioned above could be achieved within a specified time frame. The objective of achieving the short-term and long term goals during the program has been planned systematically by drafting specific steps which gets monitored at the end of every week.

The teachers get ample support from the ELE trainers who help them to achieve the weekly objectives by clearing their doubts and guiding them at every step.

Teaching Aids and Methodology

Language by nature is very abstract and intangible. Children, on the other hand, are very literal and concrete.

This makes it challenging to explain grammar or syntax rules to children and VT’s ELE program tackles this challenge by play way method of imparting education to children.

Many academicians believe that children learn best through play and Vidyarambam has proven this method of learning by way of its teaching methodologies.

Phonemes:

The starting point for Vidyarambam’s Easy Learning English had identified and classified the phonemes for the letters of the English alphabet, which formed the basis for ELE.Phonemes of the alphabet are taught to the children before teaching graphemes. This helps them grasp the sounds easily and apply it to the new words they learn. Teachers also use the method of associating an action with a sound, making thelearning process more visual, fun and easy.

Play Games:

Games are a great way to make Learning fun. Not only do games play on the competitive nature of most children, but games also give them a goal to accomplish. There are so many games that have been included in the ELE program to make learning fun and enjoyable.

Nature Walk :

Students are taken outside the class and inside the School to observe and later discuss the observation in the class. Each student talks about his experience which improves his vocabulary and also encourages him to speak before a crowd.

No Pressure on the students:

One of the most important things that this Program emphasises is not to put pressure on students. In fact, children learn some aspects of foreign languages more easily than adults. We achieve this by not correcting every error that the students make. Instead of pointing out the mistakes directly, the teacher uses the right words or sentences repeatedly that the student observes by way of listening and thereby avoids using the wrong words. Keeping things fun and pressure free, children learn the language with much enthusiasm.

Evaluation

Vidyarambam performs continuous diagnostic tests through the program in various ways. One such is the dictation of common words on a daily basis. Mid-term evaluation is conducted and progress isdiscussed with the children and the teachers to ensure that they stay on course. A final evaluation on (reading, writing and spoken) English is conducted to ensure that the children got the best out of the Vidyarambam Trust.
